热中子反应堆 是用慢化剂把快中子速度降低，使之成为热中子（或称慢中子），再利用热中子来进行链式反应的一种装置。由于热中子更容易引起铀－235等裂变，这样，用少量裂变物质就可获得链式裂变反应。慢化剂是一些含轻元素而又吸收中子少的物质，如重水、铍、石墨、水等。热中子堆一般都是把燃料元件有规则地排列在慢化剂中，组成堆芯。链式反应就是在堆芯中进行的。
