正史是指以纪传体，编年体，国别体，政书体（典志体）和纪事本末体为编撰体例的史书。代表史书有纪二十四史。其他纪传体体裁的史书也可称为正史。早期我国史书如《春秋》等都为编年体史书，后司马迁在编写《史记》过程中增补了本纪、世家、列传、志、表，班固编写《汉书》沿用此体例，但删去世家。 此后纪传体被各朝奉为正规体列。而以纪传体为编写体例的书也就称作正史，意味用正规体例写作的史书。
