糖类可根据分子中所含碳原子的数目命名，含五个碳原子的单糖 称为戊糖，又称五碳糖。戊糖在生物界分布很广，在生命活动中具有重要作用。主要有D-木糖、L-阿拉伯糖、D-核糖及其衍生物D-2-脱氧核糖。作为糖代谢中间产物的戊酮糖有D-核酮糖和D-木酮糖。 D-核糖主要存在于细胞核内，是核酸的重要成分。生物体内的核糖有两种：D-核糖和D-脱氧核糖。D-木糖广泛存在于植物界，麸皮、木材、棉子壳、玉米穗等水解可得到D-木糖。D-木糖是糖代谢的中间产物，在生命活动中具有重要作用。L-阿拉伯糖广泛存在于植物界，多以多聚戊糖形式存在，在松柏科植物的心材中有游离存在。L-阿拉伯糖是植物分泌的胶黏质及半纤维多糖的组成成分，不能被酵母利用发酵。
