商业电影专指以获利为主要或唯一的创作目的的电影类型。电影诞生之初，由于它为观众带来了一种新奇的娱乐方式，因而只被电影商人当作牟利的工具。此后，电影的艺术地位渐渐确立，但电影生产的企业化制度也日趋成熟，因而有相当一部分制片人和投资者，以低成本、短周期的方式来摄制迎合大众口味的模式化的影片，从而获取“利市三倍”的商业经营效益。早期好莱坞生产的大量类型电影均属此范畴。
