In prior studies, Sipkins found that leukemia cells and some solid tumors create specific niches in the bone marrow where they multiply and spread.

The team also identified some birds with small brains which have survived in the city by finding niches which resemble their natural environment.

"Some of [the small] brained species are lucky enough to find niches in urban habitats that are by coincidence a pretty good approximation of their original habitat," he said.
