abstract:Revenue passenger miles (RPMs) and revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs) are measures of traffic for an airline flight, bus, or train calculated by multiplying the number of revenue-paying passengers aboard the vehicle by the distance traveled. On long-distance buses and trains (and some planes) passengers may board and disembark at intermediate stops, in which case RPMs/RPKs have to be calculated for each segment if a careful total is needed.
Passenger yield (Passenger Revenue per RevenuePassengerMile) for American has decreased slightly in recent years due to competition from low-cost airlines and poor domestic economic conditions.
Domestic Passenger yield (passenger revenue per revenuepassengermile) for UAL has decreased slightly in recent years due to competition from low-cost airlines and poor domestic economic conditions.
Delta, United, American, Southwest and Alaska were all over 7.5% of revenuepassenger miles with awards. (A revenuepassengermile, or one passenger flying one mile, is the standard measure of traffic for airlines.) Alaska was best at a hefty 9% of revenuepassenger miles on frequent-flier awards.
