旧唯物主义 同“新唯物主义”相对。泛指马克思主义哲学以前的唯物主义。它既包括古代的朴素唯物主义，也包括形而上学唯物主义、机械的唯物主义等（注：庸俗唯物主义不是旧唯物主义）。在通常情况下，主要是指16—18世纪英法等国的形而上学唯物主义和机械的唯物主义以及19世纪德国费尔巴哈的唯物主义。
旧唯物主义的立场是市民社会，新唯物主义的立场是人类社会或者社会化人类。
