海洋浮游生物(marine plankton)是悬浮在水层中常随水流移动的海洋生物。这类生物缺乏发达的运动器官，没有或仅有微弱的游动能力；绝大多数个体很小，须在显微镜下才能看清其构造，只有个别种的个体甚大，如北极霞水母(Cyanea arctica)最大直径可达 2米；种类繁多，隶属于植物界和动物界大多数门类；数量很大，分布较广，几乎世界各海域都有。1887年，德国浮游生物学家V.亨森首先采用"Plankton”一词专指浮游生物。该词来自希腊文， 意为漂泊流浪。
