海员是航行大海的船只的工作人员的统称，一般分为高级海员和普通海员。高级海员分为管理级和操作级：管理级：船长，轮机长，大副，大管轮，政委（仅中国有）；操作级：二副，二管轮，三副，三管轮。 普通海员又称支持级 水手长，机工长，一水，二水，机工等，还包括厨师，事务员等。现在国内沿海的船上绝大部分还有管事一职，又称为船东代表，应属管理级。 海员不仅要有强健的体魄、娴熟的专业技能，还要具备良好的心理素质、较强的环境适应能力和应对突发事件的应变能力，海员职业对从业人员具有相当高的职业素养要求。
