水梅是属于夹竹桃科倒吊笔属的常绿灌木或小乔木。株高可达2米，具白色体液。叶对生，卵状披针形，薄革质。春末至秋季开花，聚伞花序，顶生，花冠短筒状，先端5裂，裂片白色，悬垂性，素雅芳香。瞢薆果长线形，2枚对生。园艺栽培种有细叶水梅、斑叶重瓣水梅、变叶水梅。原产泰国至越南的热带地区。水梅在东南亚是重要的绿篱植物。
