张元素，字洁古，金之易州（河北省易县军士村，今水口村）人，他自幼聪敏，8岁应“童子举”，27岁试“经义”进士，因犯“庙讳”而落榜，遂弃仕从医。中医易水学派创始人，生卒之年无以确切考证而不详。其所处时代略晚于与其同时期的医家刘完素。著有《医学启源》、《脏腑标本寒热虚实用药式》、《药注难经》、《医方》、《洁古本草》、《洁古家珍》以及《珍珠囊》等。其中《医学启源》与《脏腑标本寒热虚实用药式》最能反映其学术观点。
