Other planned projects which have fuelled a demand for building workers include a proposed 30-turbine offshorewind farm at Scarweather Sands, off Porthcawl, the proposed development of film studios at Llanharan, near Bridgend and city centre developments in Swansea.
Above sea level, the offshore structure has been bolted together with a conventional offshoreturbine of the sort used for near-shore wind farms that are bolted to the sea-bed.
This could be possible as there is tremendous potential for economies of scale, both in terms of mass production, which reduces the cost of each turbine, and in terms of the construction and management of vast wind farms offshore where there are few limits on available acreages.
Considering that the standard turbine size is roughly one third of this size, the new breed of mega offshorewind turbines would seem sufficiently massive to inspire shock and awe in most people.
