李十中1984年7月毕业于天津大学化工系，后师从于两院院士王淀佐教授攻读博士学位。曾供职于天津煤气公司、天津纺织工学院、天津大学；自2000年起留学香港大学、英国牛津大学，历任香港大学土木工程系环境工程中心附属研究员、英国牛津大学工程科学系博士后研究员。2004年7月离开牛津大学回国任中国农业大学生物质工程中心教授、副主任，国家中长期科学与技术发展规划农业专题组专家，与两院院士石元春教授一起倡导发展中国的生物质产业以期解决中国的能源短缺、环境污染和“三农”问题，提出“不争粮、不争地”的产业发展原则；2005年12月受聘为清华大学核能与新能源技术研究院教授，研究领域为替代石油的生物质能源与生物质化工产品，还涉及生物质能源战略。其中在非粮原料（如甜高粱）生产燃料乙醇、沼气净化后作为运输燃料、生物基乙烯、秸秆替代石油C4组分生产化工产品方面实现重大突破，尤其是甜高粱固态发酵生产乙醇技术居国际领先水平固态发酵时间、能耗都低于玉米乙醇，收率高于玉米乙醇；纤维素乙醇技术研究方面也取得重要进展。
