黏菌是一群类似霉菌的生物，会形成具有细胞壁的孢子，但是生活史中没有菌丝的出现，而有一段黏黏的时期，因而得名(slime molds)。这段黏黏的时期是黏菌的营养生长期，细胞不具细胞壁，如变形虫一样，可任意改变体形，故又称为“变形菌”(荻原博光等， 1995)，归入原生生物界 (Hawksworth et al., 1995)。
