黏膜免疫系统是由分布于胃肠道、泪道、唾液分泌管、呼吸道、泌尿道和乳腺黏膜内的淋巴组织组成的，占据了机体淋巴组织的大部分。其中胃肠道的黏膜免疫系统尤令人关注，特征如下：具有特殊的集合淋巴结(又称Peyer’spatches)；具有黏膜归巢(muoz~alhoming)受体，即淋巴细胞通过再循环又回到黏膜的模式；是IAe B细胞和记忆T细胞定位的所在地；所分泌的免疫球蛋白主要是S~IAe等。这些性质一方面能使宿主不受病原体的伤害，另一方面会使机体对普通的食物抗原和正常的微生物产生免疫耐受。
