早期的鸭式布局飞起来像一只鸭子，“鸭式布局”由此得名，前移的前翼也由此而被称为“鸭翼”。无水平尾翼，机翼前面有水平小翼面的飞机。机翼前面的小翼面称为前翼或鸭翼，前翼可以像水平尾翼那样起着俯仰操纵和平衡的作用；也可以仅用固定前翼，这时飞机的俯仰操纵由机翼后缘的升降副翼来完成。鸭式飞机因有前翼而不易失速，有利于简化飞机驾驶和保证飞行安全。在超声速飞机上采用小展弦比、大后掠角的三角形前翼和机翼，它们之间存在有利的气流干扰，在一定程度上弥补了鸭式飞机的缺点。
