高能加速器高能物理主要的实验研究工具。即利用强磁场把带电粒子，如电子、质子加速到很高速度，然后去与靶物质相碰撞，碰撞的结果可产生大量的新的基本粒子，或新的现象。通过对这些新的粒子，新的现象的观测分析，可以不断加深对物质微观结构的认识。高能加速器能量越来越高。现认为，介子及重子都是由“层子”（或称夸克）组成的。如果证实了“层子”的存在，判明了它的结构，很多理论问题如弱相互作用等问题将随之得到解决。
