技工学校是培养现代化高级技术技能型人才的主要基地。招生对象主要是初中毕业生，学制3年。技工学校实行教学实习与科研生产相结合。经过几十年的改革发展，目前技工学校已形成初、中、高级培训并存，学历教育与职业资格证书教育相结合，多层次、多功能、多元化的职业培训体系，遍及机械、电子、计算机、航空、电力、石油、冶金、铁路等近30个部门和系统。现行的技工学校可分为：普通技工学校、高级技工学校及技师学院等三个层次。
