马祖道一是禅宗最主要宗派洪州宗的祖师。俗姓马，又称道一、洪州道一、江西道一。汉州什方县（今四川什邡马祖镇）人，谥号大寂禅师。 马祖主张道不用修，或者说任心为修。即心是佛——非心非佛——平常心是道是他的佛性思想与实践的总纲领。他让“顿悟”说付诸实行，取代了看经坐禅的传统，促使禅僧普遍革新禅的观念。 马祖道一禅师门下极盛，有“八十八位善知识”之称，法嗣139人，以百丈怀海、西堂智藏、南泉普愿最为闻名，号称洪州门下三大士。其中百丈怀海门下开衍出临济宗、沩仰宗二宗。
