颞下颌关节又称“颞颌关节”或“下颌关节”。由下颌头与颞骨下颌窝和关节结节组成，左右合成一联合关节，主理张口闭口和咀嚼运动。关节囊松弛，侧方为内、外侧韧带所加强。囊内的关节盘呈卵圆形，由纤维软骨组成，区分为前、中、后三部分。上面呈鞍状，前凹后凸，与关节结节和下颌窝的凸凹轮廓相对应；下面凹正对下颌头，周缘与关节囊相接，前缘与穿过关节囊的翼外肌腱相连。关节盘将关节腔分成上、下两半。关节外更有蝶下颌韧带(蝶棘至下颌小舌)和茎突下颌韧带(茎突至下颌角)予以加固。
