领域行为一译“领地行为”。有机体为防止入侵领域而采取的保卫行为。如雄性红翅燕、八哥等鸟类，会在早晨控制着某些区域，在这些领域里呜叫，并把所有的入侵者赶走。人的领域是指人与人之间彼此都占有一定的空间，若这个区域受到侵犯，会引起一定的防御性反应，如在公共场所人们总是企图占据一定的空间，并与其他人保持一定的距离，若别人过于靠近，则感到不自在，引起避开或其他反应。阿尔特曼与同事以海军士兵为被试进行了研究。首先对一些被试进行控制欲(即总是希望控制别人的欲望)水平测试，然后采取两种模式配对，其一是控制欲强的与控制欲强的配对，另一种是控制欲强的与控制欲弱的配对。然后分别将配对的被试放到一问极小的房间内在8天～10天。结果两个控制欲强的人很快就有争吵，以致于难以忍受，从而出现领域行为，在很小的房内各自划出自己的一半，互不侵犯；另一对则不同，一开始就划地为牢，互不侵犯，但随着接触增多，领域行为反而不严格了，即相互反而亲密了。阿尔特曼由此认为，人类之间的空间领域行为与动物不同，它较灵活、开放。
