广义闽中即福建，唐朝中期前闽中即闽的名称。因闽处在吴越（浙江北部）和南越（广东大部、广西、越南中北部）中间，故称闽中。 2019年，闽中（莆田市，三明市）常住人口550万，其中莆田市常住人口291万，三明市常住人口259万。闽中（莆田市，三明市）实现地区生产总值5196.95亿元。
