镁橄榄石属超基性深成岩,是普通的造岩矿物,也是岩浆结晶时最早形成的矿物之一,多赋存在辉长岩、玄武岩和橄榄岩类的火成岩里。共生矿物有磁铁矿、辉石、钙斜长石、铬铁矿及蛇纹石等。含铁橄榄石小于10%的镁橄榄石或蛇纹石化橄榄岩,灼减量小于5%的可直接用作耐火原料,而蛇纹石化较严重,灼减量大于5%的,须经过煅烧或配以镁砂,可制耐火材料。世界各地多有产出,中国分布较广、储量大的有内蒙古、新疆、四川、湖北、陕西、河北等省、自治区。由于镁橄榄石的抗碱性炉渣很强,其制品多用作蓄热室格子砖等。
