铸件上常有各种孔，如螺栓孔、减重孔、观察孔、油孔、气道、工艺孔等等。为铸造出这些孔，一般都得使用型芯。型芯由于受到高温金属液的包围，工作条件比铸型恶劣，它很易过热而在孔的表面产生热枯砂，在孔的周围产生缩孔和缩松缺陷。如果型芯透气性不良，还易产生气孔。此外，由于型芯受到金属液的浮力作用很易变形，甚至断裂。如果铸造盲孔(不通孔》，由于型芯只能从一头支承固定，比铸造通孔更困难.由此可见，尺寸太小的孔或又细又长的孔，若不采取特殊的工艺措施(见第十章第四节)是难以铸造的。因此，在铸造工艺上有最小铸孔的限制，小于最小铸孔尺寸的孔，一般就不直接铸出，而用切削加工方法来获得，.这样较经济合理。
