银元起源于15世纪，始铸于欧洲，俗称“洋钱”、“花边钱”或“大洋”，是银铸币的通称，是世界上银本位制国家的主要流通货币，大约在16世纪，银元流入我国。1890年（光绪16年）官方开始正式铸造银元，民国时期建立银本位货币制度以后，也以银元作为主要流通币。银元是近代币收藏的重要币种之一。
