铈是周期系第ΙΙΙ族副族镧系元素，一种稀土元素。原子序数58。稳定同位素：136、138、140、142。灰色金属，有展性。密度：正方晶体6.9g/cm3，立方晶体6.7g/cm3。熔点799℃，沸点3426℃。 铈是一种银灰色的活泼金属，粉末在空气中易自燃，易溶于酸。铈的名称来源于小行星谷神星的英文名。铈在地壳中的含量约0.0046%，是稀土元素中丰度最高的。金属铈主要做还原剂。
