物体重心与地球重心的连线称为铅垂线（用圆锥形铅垂测得）。多用于建筑测量。用一条细绳一端系重物，在相对于地面静止时，这条绳所在直线就是铅垂线，又称重垂线。地球重力场中的重力方向线。它与水准面正交，是野外观测的基准线。悬挂重物而自由下垂时的方向，即为此线方向。包含它的平面则称铅垂面。
铅垂线总是垂直于水平面的。
