铁是世界上发现最早，利用最广，用量也是最多的一种金属，其消耗量约占金属总消耗量的95%左右。铁矿石主要用于钢铁工业，冶炼含碳量不同的生铁（含碳量一般在2%以上）和钢（含碳量一般在2%以下）。
