高熔点金属之一，呈浅灰色。熔点1890±10℃，其中以5价态为最稳定，其次是4价态。电离能为6.74电子伏特。有延展性，质坚硬，无磁性。具有耐盐酸和硫酸的本领，并且在耐气-盐-水腐蚀的性能要比大多数不锈钢好。于空气中不被氧化，可溶于氢氟酸、硝酸和王水。
