金属锂，是瑞典化学家阿·阿尔夫维特桑在1817年首先在一种稀有的岩石中发现的。按希腊文原意，锂就是“岩石”。 锂，是银白色的金属，非常轻，是所有金属中最轻的一种。锂被用于冶金工业上。在铜中加入少量的锂（十万分之五），便能大大改善铜的性能：这是因为锂具有活泼的化学性质，能和氧、氮、硫等铜中有害杂质反应，起去气剂的作用。在铝、镁及其他金属中加入少量的锂，能够提高它们的坚固性和耐酸、耐碱性能。
