里氏硬度是由瑞士LEEB博士1978年首次提出的全新的硬度测量方法，它的定义是：用规定质量的冲击体在弹力作用下以一定速度冲击试样表面，用冲头在距离试样表面1mm处的回弹速度与冲击速度之比计算出的数值，因LEEB博士提出而得名，故而叫里氏硬度。
