酚酞是指一种化学成品，属于晶体粉末状，几乎不溶于水。其特性是在酸性和中性溶液中为无色，在碱性溶液中为紫红色。常被人们用来检测酸碱。酚酞属刺激剂，用于慢性便秘。能直接刺激肠黏膜或活化肠内平滑肌的神经末梢而增加肠的推进力。因产生过度缓泻而导致体液与电解质障碍。长期使用可损害肠神经系统，且很可能是不可逆的。 2017年10月27日，世界卫生组织国际癌症研究机构公布的致癌物清单初步整理参考，酚酞在2B类致癌物清单中。
