现在的十堰地域，古称郧阳，位于鄂、豫、渝、陕毗邻地区，秦巴山区腹地，汉江中游，汉江在境内流程216公里，襄渝铁路自东向西穿境而过，老(老河口市)白（白河）公路、316和209国道纵横其间。20世纪60年代，中国第二汽车制造厂（今东风公司）建于这里。境内还坐落着世界文化遗产——武当山，占建筑群，南水北调中线工程主要水源区三其境内。十堰市是一座年轻的汽车城、旅游城、生态园林城和区域性中心城市。
