造山运动是指一定地带内的地壳物质受到水平方向挤压力作用、岩石急剧变形而大规模隆起形成山脉的运动，仅影响地壳局部的狭长地带。造山运动常发生在地槽区，和造陆运动相比较，其发生和完成的时间较短，其状呈狭长条带，褶皱、断裂、角度不整合、岩浆侵入和区域变质作用发育。当前观测到的最后一次造山运动是燕山运动，其结束的时间是白垩纪末期，距今已有1亿年。
