边际分析是为作出最佳选择而对有关备选方案的边际成本、边际收入和边际利润所进行的观察、计量与分析。边际收入同边际成本之间的差额为边际利润。当边际收入大于边际成本，边际利润为正数时，企业的盈利总额将随产销量的增加而增加; 而当边际收入小于边际成本，边际利润为负数时，企业的盈利总额将随产销量的增加而减少，甚至发生亏损。这就是说，只有当边际收入等于 (或趋近于) 边际成本，边际利润等于 (或趋近于) 零时，企业的盈利总额将达到最大值。可见，边际分析的结果及其所揭示的边际收入同边际成本之间的数量关系是确定有关产品最佳产销规模的重要依据，这种决策分析方法可应用于产品生产和产品定价等决策中。
