边缘科学（Boundary Science）是指在原有学科之间相互交叉、渗透而形成的科学。19世纪70年代，恩格斯就曾根据当时自然科学发展所显示的突破原有学科界限的新趋势，在分析各种物质运动形式相互转化的基础上预言：原有学科的邻接领域将是新学科的生长点。不久，即在物理学和化学之同交叉而产生物理化学，在化学和生物学之间交叉而产生生物化学等。20世纪以来，现代科学技术的蓬勃发展加剧了学科之间的相互渗透，导致边缘科学大量产生。
