化学成分Ag2S，含Ag87.1%。等轴晶系。晶体呈立方体、八面体，通常为致密块状。颜色和条痕均为铅灰色。新鲜断口呈金属光泽。摩氏硬度2-2.5。密度7.2-7.4。具弱延展性。 是热液成因矿物，形成于173℃以上。在此温度以下，则转变为成分相同的螺状硫银矿。是炼银的矿物原料，但银的主要来源是从铜铅锌矿石中作为副产品而得到。
银矿物除自然银外，还见有后期铜的硫化物交代自然银形成的含铜辉银矿。
