我国现代的分为主标志和辅助标志两大类。主标志按其含意可分为四种：警告标志、禁令标志、指示标志和指路标志。辅助标志共5种，是附设在主标志下，起辅助说明作用标志，这种标志不能单独设立和使用。辅助标志按其用途又分为表示时间、表示车辆种类、表示区域距离、表示警告和禁令理由的辅助标志以及组合辅助标志等几种。其形状为长方形，其颜色为白底、黑字、黑边框。此外，还有一种可变交通信息标志，它根据道路检测到的情况（如占道施工、阻塞、流量、流向的变化、气候状况等），把某种信息及时显示出来，传达给车辆驾驶人员和行人。
前面有通行高度限制的警告标志，用以预先警告驾驶人，并有辅助标志牌，说明限制生效的地点距离有多远。
