轮作制，是指在同一块田地上有顺序地在年度间轮换种植不同作物或复种组合的种植方式。轮作通常分为大田轮作和草田轮作两大类。大田轮作以生产粮食或工业原料为主，包括为了满足专门的生产要求而建立的专业轮作，为了能多方面满足国家对农产品需要而建立的水旱轮作，以及为后茬作物提供较好水肥条件的休闲轮作；草田轮作以生产粮食作物和牧草并重，包括利用空闲季节或作物行间隙地种植绿肥，是用地养地相结合的粮肥轮作和绿肥轮作，以及以生产饲料为主，同时也种植粮食作物或蔬菜作物的词料轮作。轮作的命名取决于该轮作中的主要作物构成，被命名的作物群应占轮作区面积的1/3以上。常见的有禾谷类轮作、禾豆轮作、粮食和经济作物轮作，水旱轮作、草田轮作等。轮作是用地养地相结合的一种生物学措施，有利于均衡利用土壤养分，防治病、虫、草害；能有效地改善土壤的理化性状，调节土壤肥力。例如，稻麦轮作体系能够改善长期淹水稻田的物理性状，土壤团粒结构和毛管空隙增加，pH趋于中性等，有利于作物的生长；水旱交替能有效防治某些病虫害和杂草，增加土壤中的有机碳，促进氮素的循环等。
