轨距是铁路轨道两条铁轨（钢轨）之间的距离（以钢轨的内距为准）。现在全世界有多种不同的轨距，分为普轨、宽轨、窄轨。 国际铁路协会在1937年制定1435mm为标准轨即普轨（等于英制的4英尺8½英寸），世上百分之六十的铁路的轨距是标准轨。这普通轨距又称标准轨距或国际轨距。比标准轨宽的轨距称为宽轨，比标准轨窄的称为窄轨。双轨距铁路或多轨距铁路铺有三或四条钢轨，让使用不同轨距的列车都可行驶。 相同轨距可以有不同车身宽度高度，例如，中国标准轨道上的中国标准动车组比传统列车宽一些、高一些、舒服一些。
