电动机的起动电流是指电动机接通额定电压从零速开始起动时输入的线电流。电动机起动电流一般为其额定电流的5～7倍。电动机起动电流过大，对电气设备及电网影响较大。对于大中型电动机，应将其额定电流限制在额定电流的2～2.5倍。大容量电动机的起动，常采用自耦变压器、补偿开关等以限制起动电流。
