语义学是指数理逻辑符号学分支之一。关于符号或语言符号（语词、句子等表达式）与其所指对象关系的学科。美国莫里斯在提出语形学、语义学和语用学的区分时，认为语义学是对指符号与它可以运用于其上的对象之间的关系的研究。卡尔纳普赞同这一区分，在《语义学导论》等著作中对语义学进行细致研究，并把语义学分为描述的语义学和纯粹的语义学。描述的语义学对某种历史地形成的语言的语义学特征，或对一切历史地形成的语言的语义学特征进行描述和分析。因所描述的是事实，故属于经验科学。
