设计教学法最早是由克伯屈提出的，也叫单元教学法，目的在于设想、创设一种问题的情景，让学生自己去计划去执行解决问题。他作为杜威的学生，沿袭了杜威的主要教育思想，在1918年详细地论述了设计教学法的理论基础和实施步骤，并成为这一教学法的代表人物。设计教学法要求废除传统的班级授课制，摒弃教科书，不受学科限制，由儿童根据自己的兴趣决定学习内容，在自己设计、自己负责的单元活动中获得有关知识和解决实际问题的能力。因此，整个的设计教学是包括实际的思考与各样的活动在内，一边思考，一面执行，既用脑，也用手。
