作为一门新兴的学科，设计学的产生是20世纪以来的事件；作为一门专门的学科，它毫无疑问有着它自己的研究对象。由于设计与特定的物质生产与科学技术的关系，这使得设计学本身具有自然科学的客观性特征；而设计与特定社会的政治、文化、艺术之间所存在的显而易见的关系，又使得设计学在另一方面有着特殊的意识形态色彩。《设计学概论》希望引起中国设计界对理论问题的关注进而对设计教育的关注，并最终使设计学成为一门真正登载教育和实践两方面都得到落实的学科。
