曲牌所规定的格式之外另加的字，称为“衬字”。 曲可加衬字，是它与词或诗的主要区别之一。它使曲文在遵守格律的前提下，有更大的灵活性，行文造字更为自由，不受格律的束缚。小令所用的衬字较少，套曲则比较多。在曲谱中，衬字往往用小字书写，以区别于正字。衬字一般不占用乐曲的节拍、音调，往往是唱时快速而有节奏地一口带过。此外，杂剧使用衬字比较普遍，而南戏则比较少用。
