现代西方社会学理论之一，与结构功能主义相左。本世纪50年代后流行于西欧和美国，着重探讨社会冲突的本质和根源，冲突的类型、预防及其在社会生活中的作用等。西方学者对冲突至今没有统一的定义表述和分类。一种意见认为，冲突可分为文化冲突、经济冲突、分配冲突；另一种意见则把冲突分为现实型和非现实型两种，前者视冲突为达到自己目的的最有效途径，后者则把冲突作为消除紧张心理或用来证实人们同感的方式。
