蠕墨铸铁是具有片状和球状石墨之间的一种过渡形态的灰口铸铁，它是一种以力学性能和导热性能较好以及断面敏感性小为特征的新型工程结构材料。蠕墨铸铁作为一种新型铸铁材料出现在20世纪60年代。我国是研究蠕墨铸铁最早的国家之一。1966年山东省机械设计研究院发表了稀土高强度灰铸铁论文，标志了我国蠕墨铸铁生产技术的研制成功。
