蛇鳗是鳗鲡目(Anguilliformes)、蛇鳗科(Ophichthidae)海水鱼的统称。共200多种，遍布全世界，大多在热带与温带水域。形似蛇，远较与之近缘而富进攻性的海鳝温良得多。尾部尖且锐利（而海鳝的尾侧扁），用以在海底向後打洞，形成一保护穴。斑蛇鳗(Ophichthus ophis)见於南大西洋和加勒比海，长达120公分(4呎)。
蛇鳗科鱼类广布于各大洋的热带和亚热带大陆架水域，可依靠尖突的头部和尖秃骨化的尾端在沙土或珊瑚礁后潜穴。
Distributed in continental shelf depths of all tropica and subtropical oceans, Ophichthidae can burrow in sand and mud substrates or coral reefs by pointed rayless tail tips or acute snouts.
可能是修鳗，不过也有可能是条蛇。
