牡蛎的别名。如：蚝蛎（牡蛎）；生蚝（粤语地区）、蚵仔（闽南语地区）；蚝壳（指牡蛎；牡蛎的外壳）；蚝浦（产牡蛎的浅海）。 在中医药方中的“牡蛎”，指的是牡蛎壳。 在动物分类中属于瓣鳃纲，牡蛎科，拉丁文：Ostrea，繁体字写作：蠔。在江浙以北至渤海一带的沿海地区，人们一般都称之为：牡蛎或海蛎子；在福建沿海及台湾地区的人们称之为：蚵仔；而在两广及海南等南海水域的人们都称之蚝。蚝（Oyster）蚝演化於侏罗纪，在温暖的南方海域，岛屿周围的海床及岩石上制造、形成礁状物。
