蕲蛇属蝮蛇科、蝮蛇属。蕲蛇全身黑质白花，吻鳞与鼻间鳞均向背方翘起，又叫白花蛇，褰鼻蛇，五步蛇。头呈三角形，背黑褐色，头腹及喉部白色，间或少数黑褐色斑点，称“念珠斑”。属部侧扁，尾尖一枚鳞片尖长，称角质刺，也叫“佛背甲”。蕲蛇产于蕲春蕲州龙峰山，两湖、三角山一带，喜食蛙、蟾蜍、蜥蝎、鸟、鼠等。成长极慢，现也成为濒危动物。蕲蛇味甘咸、性温，具有祛风湿、散风寒、舒筋活络等药效。
